LCPS Grad Rate

A parent referred me to this story today...

Local school systems among tops in nation

...
Loudoun County led the region with 89 percent of its high school students estimated to earn a diploma within four years, according to federal data compiled by the trade publication Education Week. The survey tracked trends between 1996 and 2006, using the most recent nationwide information available.
...

I believe the LCPS graduation percentage has increased since the data used in that study.

That is great news and should be a point of pride for everyone - the school board, administrators, teachers, parents, and students. Great Job!

I read the article Sew Creative Mom pointed to and it said the grad rate went down from 92.9% the previous year. I'm concerned about why LCPS is regressing. Yes, the current grad rate is higher for LCPS and every other school system, but I believe it is only because a different methodology is now being used.

I went back and reread the Post article and was concerned about the posts by teachers about the "social promotion" that they think is going on in the schools. Since some of them mentioned benchmarks, it sounds like they are referring to elementary students. I did note that in the article it states that under the new methodology the 2008 graduation rate was 93.6% My concern is the 6% that are not graduating - some of them have been in the news recently for committing crimes in our neighborhoods. I know one in particular spent an unusual amount of time as a sophomore.

Sorry, gotta say that it sure seems like Hatrick is cashing in his chips to get others to promote Loudoun schools (which are no doubt true) in order to help balance all the bad press he and his senior staff have been getting with their stinky land deals. The heat just got turned up with the latest news of an FBI investigation of LCPS.
