It's Going to Get Worse

Next week as school opens you'll see larger class sizes, fewer buses for athletics and activities, testing fees, athletic fees and higher parking fees. Ready for more?

Loudoun Faces Grim Budget Forecast ... and of course the school budget is targeted first.
County officials already have indicated that deep cuts are likely and might come from Loudoun County Public Schools, which receives 70 percent of the county budget, or about $762 million. "It's the biggest part of our budget, and we've been discussing cuts for years -- but with the forecast being like it is, we may have to go further," said Supervisor Jim Burton

  1. And yet bussing Ashburn Farm kids out of Stone Bridge HS to a HS 4 times as far is still on the table. Save some money, let them walk!!!

  2. We could also save money and help the environment by having the Ashburn Farm kids that live across the street from Broad Run go there instead of busing them to Stone Bridge. You are absolutely right; Save Some Money, Let Them Walk!!!

  3. As an educator who's felt the pinch of rough economic times lately, I hope we won't have another year without a step increase. I truly believe there are lots of other places to cut spending in the school budget.

  4. Sending Ashburn Farm kids to Broad Run is not the solution. They already have 9 trailers!! Briar Woods is not the solution either, I heard their freshman class has over 500 kids!! The solution would be to keep communities together and use available seats in Leesburg for those North of Rt. 7.

  5. Seems to me there will be a lot of ways the school system could save money. I have 3 kids and last year we got 3 copies of the same materials at the beginning of the school year. This year its only 2 copies as one is off to college. Seems like 1 copy could get sent home with 1 of the kids. We also get asked for a lot of information from the teachers that they should be able to get through the county as they have that information already (addresses, phone numbers, parents names, etc).

Eliminate a lot of the duplication that goes on and I'm sure there would be some savings right off the bat.
