LCPS Principals get Twitter Primer, but not access

LCPS principals get a "Principals Packet" every month with various articles and materials generated by an outside company. It is distributed in hard copy (fail). This month (Sept 09) it contains a piece called "Honey, I shrunk the blog! A primer on Twitter."
The possibilities for schools are endless. Twitter gives you another platform to share information quickly; create a positive buzz aobut your staff, students and programs; monitor community reaction; and listen to your constituents.
Of course this would be much more helpful to principals if LCPS permitted the use of Twitter by its employees.

  1. I'm guessing LCPS wants its principals to focus on things like running their schools, dealing with students and teachers, and answering questions from parents instead instead of typing on a blackberry...

  2. They don't allow access to youtube, facebook and myspace (according to my children)....I'm sure there is just as much educational value for the principals to access those sites as well... hope you can smell the sarcasm

  3. The last thing we need is more public servants spending their time on useless things. There's enough of that going around already in our public schools.

  4. Wow.

Considering that many young people report getting their information from FB & Twitter, it seems like it would be beneficial for principals to use those media to broadcast information to their students.

School closings, early closings, late openings, cancellations or changes to scheduling of club and sports meetings, volunteer opportunities, etc, are all things that could be usefully broadcast via FB and Twitter.

  5. It would be a very straightforward exercise to develop an automation and governance strategy for LCPS principals to effectively use social media in the county...would be happy to discuss more and put together a plan.
