South Riding and surrounding neighborhoods are currently engaged in a bitter fight in an attempt to ensure that somebody else's kids go to a new elementary school next fall. The school that nobody wants to go to will be named by the Board tonight (November 30, 2009). A community panel suggested the name Buffalo Trail Elementary School.
The committee’s alternate second and third name choices for School Board consideration were McGraw Ridge Elementary School and Conklin Ridge Elementary School, respectively.
I am not aware of any recommendations by Board members to deviate from that name. (Item 9.01)
Update at 7:58pm: The Board voted unanimously to follow the naming committee's recommendation and named the new elementary school "Buffalo Trail Elementary School."

Mr.Stevens,
I might suggest that the residents of South Riding are looking at this less to ensure that "someone else's" kids go to ES20 and more to ensure that the board actions for redistricting Dulles South more accurately reflect the growth pattern of the area. The staff plan, as recommended, does nothing to provide a "downstream" plan for the area in future years. It only moves people around.
I don't understand what the big issue was/is. Most students in South Riding ride buses to school, so why were people fighting this?! Brand new school, brand new equipment and Loudoun County quality education. I am an administrator at a high school in Fairfax County, and I am a tad disappointed that my neighborhood fought this. Oh well, Liberty is also good.
I hardly think the South Riding residents are looking for future growth, when students who reside less then 3000 ft from the school which they could walk to must now walk 2700 ft to a bus stop to ride to school. That sounds like very poor planning to me, but it was done because of the money and pull of South Riding.
