Governor: No School Before Labor Day

Bills that could open schools in tourism-dependent areas of Virginia before Labor Day appear doomed again.

Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell's administration on Monday came out against bills that would allow more districts the option to open before the holiday that traditionally marks the end of summer vacation.

  1. But canceling school before a flake is on the ground is not an appropriate response to this news!

  2. Sew Creative--try and put yourself in the superintendent's shoes. Do you bring students to school in the morning only to have to send them back home 2 hours later? By that time most parents are at work, and have to rush back home so they can be there when the children arrive. Or scramble to come up with child care. This puts more cars and buses on the roads at a time that is potentially dangerous to everyone.
Or do you listen to all the weather forecasts--which say 100% chance of heavy snow and cancel school ahead of time thereby eliminating a potentially dangerous situation. It is always a lose-lose situation for anyone who has to make this decision. You won't please everyone--so why not err on the side of caution!

  3. Do you have a clue sew creative? Fairfax and Alexandria will have toake up snow days yet they cancelled school yesterday.

  4. WTOP reported earlier in the week that Loudoun has 15 snow days built into the school schedule. Anyone know if that's true? I can't find anything about snow days on the LCPS web site. Sounds like a lot -- but would come in handy this year! Especially since the last day of school is already June 18.

  5. Cancelling school on Friday was a joke. Yes, we got a big snow storm, but only an inch or two was on the ground by the time school would have been out on Friday. If there was testing scheduled, like what happended a few years ago, school would not have been cancelled because that would have caused too much inconvenience for the staff. Friday was all about the staff getting a long weekend.

  6. So, you know what the weather was all over the county? Or just in your small little corner? The western part of the county received snow earlier than the eastern side. Since many high school students drive, and are inexperienced drivers, it was much more prudent to keep them off the road completely.

  7. I was waiting for the western Loudoun excuse to be brought up. There always seems to be 2 inches of ice on some unknown road out there when roads in the rest of the county are clear. I can understand people panicking out over a few inches of snow at the beginning of winter, but everyone should be used to it by now.

If the county is so concerned about inexperienced drivers, then school should be cancelled if rain is forecasted. Check the stats on traffic fatalities and you'll find a very small percentage is due to snow and ice on the roads.

15 snow days is excessive. Is that really true?
