UPDATE: The agenda has completely changed in the past 24 hours. The meeting will now be a budget review session, not a vote on the Budget, and a proposed policy change (see next post: LCPS Employees sneaking peaks at Board Member Emails?)
The original post, with the original agenda, is below:
The School board Agenda for January 24th includes review of three education-related proposals in the Virginia Legislature and adoption of a proposed budget for next year. The Board may vote to take positions on the three pieces of legislation. The Board meets at 6:30pm.
The three legislative items:
House Bill (H.B.) 1005 proposes to amend the Code of Virginia to permit nonpublic
school students to participate in Virginia High School League (VHSL)
activities. The proposed amendment is opposed by the VHSL,
Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS), the Virginia
School Boards Association (VSBA) and the Virginia Parent Teacher
Association. School Board staff does not support the proposed
amendment.
H.B. 1006 would amend the code of Virginia to provide tax
credits for expenses relating to home school instruction.
H.B. 321 would amend the Code of Virginia to establish a tax credit for corporations donating cash or property to nonprofit organizations providing education improvement scholarships to students who would have been eligible for the free and reduced lunch program under federal law, in order for them to attend nonpublic elementary or secondary schools.
